Here We Go!
Cricket News
Sunday, 05 September 2010

Big news Sunday is that Glossop were unable to take any points from Medlock Road against Woodhouses and West's first team sneaked a very squeaky single point at home in the derby game vs DSL. Twins and last wicket pair Jamie and Jordan held out under some extreme pressure from the visitors by claiming the losing draw and taking one point.

What does that mean to the league table - well with one game in hand, West have to win and bowl out the opposition to win the league - irrespective of what any other team does. it's in our hands. and keeping fingers crossed for good weather of course!

The second team were also successful in a similarly close game although they chased down 227 with under 15 Max Cole smashing 41 off the last few overs to add to fifies from John Barnett and Chris McAllister. Max has finished a good season at junior level with some great performances in the seconds and looks to be another quality player from the junior pipeline.

What a Day!

What a Day!
How do you describe today? Fantastic, Awesome, Unbelievable, Record Breaking, Bone Breaking or just Wow!
I think Wow just about does it, Chief!

The day started at 8.30am at Windsor Park for the last leg of the Stalwarts efforts to reach a cumulative 1000 miles walking to away games. With 26 turning out dressed in cricket gear and Grindy as an Indian Chief, chief and at 11.7 miles ahead of each of them aged between 5 and 70 the record looked to be in the bag and just after Gorton on the way into Manchester the target was reached and so a little bubbly was taken in Ardwick.
We were delighted to be able to finish the year's efforts at Roe Green where we received superb support. BBQ facilities, a huge plate of chicken for the walkers to add to our own burgers and sausage and to boot £50 in to the collecting tin. Thanks to everyone at Roe Green who made a great day that little bit more special. Unfortunately on the way we lost Phil Derbyshire to injury which later turned out that he has to be kept in hospital till Monday when he will have a major knee operation. Our best wishes "Bobby" and Paula, from everyone.
Donations are still being taken and you can contact Chris or Phil or follow the link to the right to the just giving web site.
We thank EVERYONE for their fantsatic support.

And now to the cricket.
In the first team game our hosts had several players unavailable and in the end this was reflected in the score as West, still in the title hunt, were fighting for maximum points. Jordan and Scott took the top order out quite early and chasing just 129 West cruised to an 8 wkt win as Lee Dale sailed past the 1000 run mark for the season and with Gareth Senior set the platform for Bezza and Kirs to finish it off.

The second team game was even more a reflection of Roe Green's missing players lost to the first team and others being unavailable, but even with 7 under 18's in the West side we were far too strong for the Roe Green side and won by a staggering 376 runs. 18 year old John Barnett led the way with a club record individual innings of 215 not out in a club record score of 435 for 2 ably supported by Lewis Riley who scored 106. It is always difficult to determine the way to play against weaker opponents but at the point any player is looking like getting a big score it is very difficult to call the innings to an end.
At the close of the innings Barney has snatched the club record from Nigel Williams and Mike Boccaro who shared the record on 210 not out. Nigel heard the news after walking to Roe Green and was delighted for him saying that he had been at a similar age when he had reached his record but was now delighted that one of the new generation had taken it on.

So where do we stand in the title race - West play DSL at home and Glossop are away at Woodhouses, conquerors of the West in the Walkden Cup Final just a few weeks ago, we hope they will keep up that form as they aim for a top four spot in the league. It will go down to the final week but tomorrow's games are the hardest for both West and Glossop. We hope you can join us at Windsor park from 1pm on sunday.

Thanks everyone for another brilliant day for West.

Saturday is the last walk of the season, through Manchester to Roe Green and if you wish to join the team when they celebrate reaching the 1000 mile target, please be at the club for 8.30 am departure, preferably in whites. There will be drinks and hopefully food on arrival at Roe Green. We have just had it confirmed that West legend Steve Robinson will also be walking for the first time this season, does he know what to expect we ask? (We have said "legend" on the promise of additional sponsorship!).

Everyone at West congratulates Chris Mulroy and Phil Jackson on another fantastic effort.

The penultimate weekend of the season is a big double header. West play Roe Green on Saturday and DSL on Sunday, games start at 1pm. Seconds at home Saturday, Firsts on Sunday. We hope you can join us.

The first team are joint leaders but lie second due to having less outright wins so need to be at their best in the last three games and take maximum points in all the games unless of course Glossop slip up.
