Australian Professional Reece Bombas arrives in the UK on Wednesday, lets give me a Formby welcome

LANCASHIRE pace bowler Tom Smith will spearhead the Formby attack on the opening day of the local cricket season tomorrow. The signing is a great coup for last year’s First Division champions, and skipper Steve Dutton is thrilled at the prospect of having a county player in their ranks. However, he admitted it all came about by accident. “Tom came down to us for a Cricket Force weekend and I got wind of the fact he wasn’t affiliated to a club. I asked him if he would like to join us and he said he would have to check with Gary Yates, who gave him the go-ahead. Dutton is delighted. “He’s a massive signing, but how much he will play for us, I don’t know. “When perhaps Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson are called up by England, Tom will be hoping to push his claims for the Lancashire first team. But if we get 10 games out of him it would be fantastic.”

Smith, a right arm medium fast bowler, is Liverpool-born. His county appearances were limited last year, taking just eight wickets in six appearances. But he proved useful with the bat, averaging just under 30.

Looking forward to life in the Premier League, Dutton added: “The club needs to consolidate and get established there. Some lads are thinking of retiring soon so we are starting a re-building programme.

“We just need to bed in, play good cricket and enjoy ourselves. Hopefully, Tom can get us a few wins.”

Dutton, Dave Hadden, who scored over 1,000 runs last season, and Graeme Morris, will come up against former club Northern at the Cricket Path tomorrow. Smith will miss the game through injury, while top order batsman Reece Bombas (New South Wales) won’t be arriving for another week.

Formby CC are delighted to announce the signing of Reece Bombass. Reece will be our Australian professional this season. 20 year old Reece has recently broken into Sydney 1st grade, and is firmly establishing himself as a top order batsman. He averages 20, is an occasional bowler and fantastic fielder. Reece plays for Gordon Cricket club, home of Sam Hinton and Brendon Macdonald. I recently spoke to Sam and he described Reece an excellent cricketer and first class bloke. We look forward to the arrival of Reece, and hope he enjoys his stay.
