17/07/10 - Glossop Stumble
Wednesday, 21 July 2010
Glossop CC: 139/9
Denton West CC: 141/4

Last Saturday Glossop welcomed second placed Denton West to North Road in what was another vital encounter in the 2010 Lancashire County League fixture list. The squally early morning weather did not provide much hope that there would be any play at all. However, following a substantial mopping up job, the required mathematics was undertaken and it was decided that each side would receive a maximum of 24 overs.

Upon calling correctly at the toss the visitor’s skipper decided to let his bowlers have first use of the conditions.

This decision seemed somewhat questionable for the first 11 overs as Pennington and Dyson got the home side off to an excellent start. They added 71 for the first wicket before Pennington pulled a ball into the hands of the mid-wicket fielder for 36.

13 more runs were added to the Glossop total before Dyson followed Pennington, dismissed for 38, the score 84 for 2.

Bates and Perera then moved the score onto 102 before the former was out for 9. And when Glossop skipper, Wilson, was unfortunate to be adjudged run out without facing a ball the hosts were 105 for 4.

Perera was joined by Stopford, and together they manoeuvred the ball well and started to provide Glossop with a platform from which a late over charge could be launched.

However, when first Stopford (9) and then Perera (31) were dismissed in quick succession the innings began to falter.

The last four overs of the innings petered out and only 10 runs were added for the loss of 5 wickets.

This stumble towards the innings end resulted in the home side ending their allotted 24 overs on a score of 139 for 9, a score 20 to 30 short of the projected target mid-innings.

Kirwin (3 for 56) and Williams (2 for 42) were the main contributors with the ball for the visitors.

Denton West’s response did not start perfectly as Hargreaves picked up the wicket of McAllister early in the piece with the score on just 7.

This brought Kirwin and Dale together, who in partnership had taken the recent Lancashire Cup encounter between the two teams away from Glossop.

Today was to be a similar story as they took their team briskly to 83, adding the runs at a quick pace, keeping the required run rate in check throughout.

Hargreaves eventually broke the partnership, Kirwin edging through to Stopford for 56.
Wilson brought Coleman back into the attack and he bowled well, repaying his captain with the wickets of Dale (31) and Turner (9).

However, a busy and unbeaten 29 from Foreman saw the Tameside outfit over the line comfortably with 3 overs remaining and 6 wickets in hand.

Hargreaves (2 for 53) and Coleman (2 for 35) shared the 4 West wickets.

The NTF Financial Solutions man of the match was awarded to Mark Dyson for his excellent 38
