Prestwich Win Hulme Trophy

On Sunday Prestwich 2XI travelled to Tameside to take on Denton West in the Hulme Trophy Final.

The home side won the toss and invited Prestwich to bat first on a good looking wicket.

Richard Scargill, John Fiorentini, Jon O'Connor and Gareth Barnes all got good starts but no-one could go on to register a big score, and although runs were coming freely, wickets were also tumbling.

At 100 for 6 and with his side’s “double” hopes hanging by a thread Prestwich skipper Andy Bradley entered the fray to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

He quickly lost Jamie McAndrew at 106 and with 16 overs left consolidation was the name of the game.

With Matty Walsh and young Tom Barling giving excellent support Bradley spent 41 balls scoring just 2 runs but with the overs running out he switched to the big guns to blast six sixes as he raced to 57 not out in the next 27 deliveries and with Barling remaining unbeaten on 9 Prestwich’s final total looked much healthier at 184-8.

The Denton West reply got off to a slow start as regular Heys openers Walsh and Pete Lorenzini, combined with Barling put an early squeeze on the run scoring which saw West register only 28 runs from their first 20 overs. Lorenzini bowled his full 10 over allotment conceding just 4 runs and taking two wickets.

Bradley wasn’t about to rest on his laurels after his batting display and when he brought himself on to bowl he spun a web with his off-breaks that snared 5 West batsmen at a cost of just 1 run to become the first player to score a fifty and take five wickets in a Hulme Trophy Final since the League’s inception in 1994.

With the Man of the Match award a formality it was left to part-time bowler Sean Haslam to wrap the innings up with 3-19 and send West to a record Hulme Trophy Final low score of 55 under the Lancashire County League banner.

Prestwich were winning the Trophy for the fifth time in the last six years and regaining it after losing in last season’s Final.
