Denton Brought To A 'Holt'

Oliver HoltDENTON were brought to a "holt" by an express performance from Prestwich's young pace ace. Eighteen-year-old Oliver Holt ripped through the batting order to claim his best-ever figures for the first team of 6 for 29.

That helped the Heys side register a comfortable 72-run victory, but left them frustrated not to claim the full five points.

The visitors showed little intent of even pursuing the three-quarter target of Prestwich's 230 total, thus depriving the home side of a valuable point by not getting all out, yet failing to gain a point from the match themselves.

Opener Mike Hudson has struck a rich vein of form, hitting his third consecutive half-century to put Prestwich well on the way to a sizeable score.

He made 63, and shared in a second-wicket stand of 110 with Ian Walker, who went to strike a fine 72 which included nine boundaries.

There were some worthy double-figure contributions in the middle order with Chris Thomas (15), Steven Lorenzini (18) and Holt ,with a rapid-fire 19 not out, playing their part.

But left-handers Peter Walters (5) and Steve Orrell (15) were ruing their luck when both were dismissed in identical and unusual fashion.

Both times, Walker drove the ball straight up the wicket for Denton bowler Patel to fortuitously divert the ball onto the stumps, and with both batsmen sticking to the correct backing-up procedure, they were run out - a dismissal rarely seen in a season, never mind in the same game and the cause of consecutive wickets!

With Chris Humphreys away, Holt was thrown the new ball and he soon had Denton in trouble - his opening seven-over spurt giving him 3 for 13.

Oliver came back for some more later, grabbing another three and putting Prestwich in reach of a five-pointer.

Young Wharton stuck it out well for Denton, making 49 before Andy Taylor struck, Craig Duxbury taking the slip catch.

Skipper Lorenzini venutred to put himself on, and the shrewdness paid off with the wicket of Scott, well taken by the sprawling Walters at mid-off, but the last pair of Parker and Ricketts survived a few harem-scarem moments to remain undefeated.

The result meant nearest pursuers Denton St Lawrence edged a point nearer, but Prestwich still hold a five-point advantage going into this week's double-header against Irlam and Stand.

* Fourteen-year-old Tom Gibson was the star performer for Prestwich's third team, hitting 51 in their close victory over Roe Green on Sunday.
