PRESTWICH CC secured second place in the Bury Sunday League Premier Division after a three-all draw against third placed SC Bury at Sandgate Road on Wednesday evening.
In a re-arranged game that saw Prestwich need to gain at least a point to secure second place in the Premier Division, third placed SC Bury were the visitors to our 'reserve pitch' at the home of Prestwich Heys FC.
A defeat would mean Prestwich would need to play their remaining match away at Holcombe in order to try and grab second place but the point gained from an entertaing draw proved enough.
The match also marked the end of Gary O'Brien's reign as manager at the club - a position he held since our inception back in 2005. His three season's in charge have brought 1 Championship and two runners-up placings as Prestwich surged through the divisions.
O'Brien's Millennium Cup exploits have been somewhat disappointing while three successive defeats in the last four of the Presidents/Challenge cups meant no final appearance for PCCFC during his tenure at the helm.
But from Division Two to Premier Division runners-up in only three seasons is a record to be proud of as he reflects on his efforts when he puts his feet up in front of the tele on Sunday mornings next winter.
An early own goal set Prestwich on their way before Jon Sharples fired the home side in to a two-goal lead.
SC Bury pulled a goal back before skipper Paul Mercer sent Prestwich in to the break with their two goal advantage restored.
A second half onslaught from Bury got the scores back level although their third should not have counted due to a blatant offside player turning the ball past Hudson in the Prestwich goal.
But the cricketers held out for a nervous last twenty minutes to secure the point required for the second spot behind runaway Premier Division Champions Heywood Reform.
