Read how our third team went on last weekend in the final matches of the season.
On Saturday our third team took on Glossop in a match re-arranged from the Hulme Trophy date. On a sunny afternoon on what looked as good a deck we had seen at the SCG all season Tim Clements did not hesitate on batting when the coin came down in his favour.
Rami Navaratnam and Alex Beirne opened the batting and got us off to a flier, scoring boundaries frequently. The fluent Beirne completed a half century with Rami making 31. Neil Flanagan came in and worked his way to a well make 51, including 2 big straight sixes. After Chris Holt was adjudged LBW padding up to a straight one second ball it was left to Jack Bond and Kieran Wong to smash a few boundaries at the end taking Stand up to a healthy 216-5 from 40 overs.
Chris Marlor and Matthew McGladdery, bowling his first spell in senior cricket open the stand attack. Glossop although not losing wickets didn’t keep up with the run rate which constantly climbed from 5 an over. After Tim Clements picked up the first wicket LBW from a quicker delivery we were in control and used a number of bowlers who all picked up wickets. Most notably Alex Bierne and Neil Flanagan picking up their first wickets of the season and Jack Bond claimed his first ever senior wicket as Glossop finished 176-5 from 40 overs to give us victory by 40 runs.
On Sunday we arrived at Glossop for the final game of the season to find Glossop an absolute road wicket. With the Manchester derby looming and the sun beating down conditions were ideal for batting. Glossop won the toss and set about building a score.
With Chris Marlor, Rami Navaratnam and OJ Bierne picking up injuries Stand’s bowling attack was stretched. Rob Wolstencroft provided a good opening spell however it was not long before the Glossop openers put on a century stand. Eddie Kirby made the break through, bowling in tandem with Tim Clements as Glossop continued to build the innings. Father and son Paul and Matthew McGladdery both bowled well without picking up wickets as Glossops’ opening bat complete what was a well made and chanceless century. Rob Wolstencroft returned and picked up two late wickets as Glossop closed on 225-3.
Our top order went out to chase to find the ball moving around much more than in the first innings and it was not long before we were three down, losing Rami, Jack Bond and Rick Watson with only 25 runs on the board. OJ Beirne and Chris Marlor were left to try and rebuild, however OJ mistimed one to offer a simple catch to long on. Chris Marlor batted well for 22 before being trapped LBW.
Tim Clements and Paul McGladdery were at the crease with stand on 90-5 and produced a number of boundaries in a 49run stand until McGladdery department for 41. Rob Wolstencroft stuck a few boundaries on his way to 22, until he went for one shot two many and was out stumped by 2 yards. Clements was the last man to go for 28 as we were all out for 167. |
