It was a top of the table clash as Glossop on Saturday with us in first against Glossop in fourth.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, we struggled to take full advantage of the conditions on probably the best wicket we will see all season, as Glossop openers Coleman and Usher bowled with purpose generating plenty of bounce and movement. After losing early wickets our middle-order showed tremendous fighting quality and spirit, and where as in the past we would have crumbled from 36/3, we batted our way back into the contest.
Chris Holt led from the front with 41 and shared a fourth wicket partnership of 39 with brother Matt, who added an important 30. Yahathugoda and Matt Holt took the score to 113/4, before Holt departed. Sutcliffe and Yahathugoda then added a sixth wicket stand of 54 to put us in a strong position of 167/5 with 10 left. Unfortunately once Sutlciffe (38) and Yahathugoda (35) were dismissed, our tail failed to wag and we didn’t take full advantage of all their hard work, losing our last four wickets for 17 runs, to finish 184 all out, on what was at least a 200 wicket. Mark Usher finished with 4/42 and Batiya Perera 4/41.
In reply Glossop lost Pennington (1) caught behind early on and Dyson didn’t have things all his own way against Sutcliffe and Weththasinghe. Glossop professional Perera played patiently early on, but by the time he reached double figures he looked set for another big knock. Dyson fell with the score at 37/2, but a third wicket stand of 97 between Perera – who was the main contributor – and Bates, put the home side in the box seat and cruising to victory. However, that never say die attitude, bred through the belief and confidence in each other was evident again and with the score on 148/3, Perera (74) smashed a ball high into the air off Matt Holt, towards the mid wicket boundary. Paul Duerden set off in pursuit and after circling underneath it for what seemed an eternity, when it finally did come down, he dived full length, stuck out his right hand and grasped an unbelievable one handed catch, to turn the game on its head and in the process took the accolade of catch of the season if not the decade!
Glossop lost three more quick wickets as Holt and Weththasinghe combined and at 156/7 the door was open and our tails were up. The home side lost two more wickets (173/9) leaving the contest on a knife edge, with 12 runs required, whilst we needed one more wicket. However, it wasn’t to be as Allen and Usher held their nerve and saw their side over the line, in what was a great game of Cricket. Weththasinghe finished with 4/71 and Matt Holt 3/38. Ultimately our sloppy fielding and undisciplined wide bowling cost us as we gave Glossop 30 extras.

On Sunday we began our Walkden Cup campaign with the visit of Thornham, who were still reeling from a nine wicket defeat at the SCG only two weeks ago.The visitors won the toss, batted first and put up a performance to be proud of, pushing us all the way in a highly entertaining game which again went down to the wire, but fortunately we were on the right end of a 1 wicket victory as we just scraped home. Again our fielding in disciplines were there for all to see and a number of shot selections left a lot to be desired. The visitors began well as we found wicket hard to come by and at 105/1 with 20 overs left a 200+ score line was looking favorite.
Mo Tyab carried his bat with an unbeaten 70, although he was dropped on 18 and made the most of his chance. McLure (26) and Micklethwaite (15) supported Tyab, but for the second time in two days extras (this time 33), was second top score for our opponents. Matt Curphey was the pick of our bowling conceding just 17 from 10 overs, whilst Sutcliffe 0/24 was too good to handle for the visitors. In the end we did well to restrict Thornham to 176, again Matt Holt chipped in with three wickets.
We got off to a dreadful start with Curphey and pro Weththasinghe both back in the shed at 10/2. Never the less our new inform opening batsmen Chris Holt seems to be relishing his opportunity at the top of the order and he and Stuart Catterall began the rescue mission. The pair looked good together and took the score to 95, before Holt was caught and bowled for 46, a knock that truthfully deserved 50. Catterall (38), fell almost immediately after and at 97/4 we didn’t look too comfortable. This became 115/6 and our participation in this seasons Walkden Cup was looking short lived.
However Itchy Yahathugoda had other ideas and he played a match winning knock in a pressure cooker situation, refusing to panic or give his wicket away as wickets tumbled at the other end. He and Penchion (6) added a vital 35 runs for the seventh wicket, but he was running out of partners and soon found himself marshalling last man Chris Marlor on debut, with 13 runs for victory in almost a carbon copy finish to the previous days match. Itchy took control and left Marlor to face just one ball as he shepherded him from the strike dealing in two’s, four’s and singles off the last ball of the over. With 7 runs required he smashed a four through midwicket, pinched a single off the last ball of the over and then finished proceedings smashing another four down the ground, which almost wiped out Marlor, to win a nail biter and set up a quarter final tie away at Denton West. Itchy finished 46 not out, with all the Thornham attack returning respectable figures.

Our second team has mixed fortunes over the weekend. We batted first at home to Glossop on Saturday and fought our way to 145 with a notable contribution of 49 from Tom Hughes. This proved to be within easy reach for a talented Glossop outfit who reached the target with consummate ease for the loss of one wicket.
On Sunday we made hard work of defending our Hulme Trophy, posting 237/8 thanks to an amazing 111 from Paul McGladdery. In reply, Thornham looked nervous at the start but flourished in the middle of the innings and got the deficit down to five runs from the final over. Remarkably, Thornham only managed to score 4 from the last over to tie the contest and thanks to a suicidal run out from the last ball we scraped through, by losing one less wicket. Next weekend the first team are in action on Saturday at the SCG against Denton West in a dress rehearsal for our Walkden Cup quarter final, with the second team at home to Roe Green on Sunday.
