League Win but Cup KO
Monday, 21 June 2010

Pro 58JR 5 for 40Saturday saw us take on Woodhouses at the SCG, a side which we hadn’t beaten on our own patch since our return to the LCL.

We lost the toss and were asked to bat first and made excellent use of the conditions, despite some quicker than usual bowling served up by visitors. Dave Taylor and Chris Holt put on 51 for the first wicket inside 16 overs with Sam Sweeney being taken out of the attack after bowling three overs for 23. Holt became Ellahi’s first victim. Never the less Weththasinghe came in continued to move the score along with him and Taylor taking the score past the hundred mark. Taylor fell for 33 as he played on a delivery from Prescott with the score on 109/2 at the halfway stage. Amila brought up a textbook half century in 47 balls, but was removed for 58 lbw to Hardman at 144/4. Useful lower order contributions followed inside the last twenty over from Matt Holt (24), Yahathugoda (20) and an unbeaten 22 from captain Penchion, gave us a fighting chance at tea having posted a spirited 230.

The visitors lost two early wicket in reply as Phil Sutcliffe was bowled by his namesake Carl for 17 (who fell over after the delivery in Steven Finn fashion) and then dangerman Josh Tolley (0) was caught behind by a beauty from Weththasinghe. However, youngster Nick Doyle was still in and holding the innings together and with the help of Luke Swards the pair put on 73 as Woodhouses reached 100/2 at the halfway stage. Swards (33), captain Tusson (5) and Doyle who hit a patient 52 all fell in quick succession to give us the upper hand with the visitors 123/5 with 15 left, with Matt Curphey and Jack Ritchie bowling exceptionally well in tandem together.

The Woodhouses lower order continued to fight - Hardman 12, Reeves 11, Sweeney 12 and Keogh 13 - but our two bowlers continued to take wickets and bowled economically throughout. Proceedings were wrapped up with three balls remaining as Curphey yorked Ellahi after setting the tail ender up with a short one the ball before. Woodhouses finished 181 all out with Jack Ritchie claiming 5 for 40, three of which were caught by Weththasinghe and Matt Curphey finished with 3 for 62, to claim all 5 points as it proved to be a good toss to lose.

On Sunday we made the trip to Windsor Park to take on Denton West in the quarter final of the Walkden Cup. After the hosts won the toss and elected to bat, we made an excellent start with pro Weththasinghe and Sutcliffe restricting West to 21/0 after 10 overs as we gained the upper hand over opners McAllister and Dale. Enforced bowling changes then aided the West cause as the openers upped the anti and moved the score along to 70 by the 20th over. We made our first breakthrough when Matt Holt removed Dale for 36, caught by Taylor in the deep. Professional Kirwin (8) followed soon after thanks to a splendid catch by Yahathugoda diving forward at mid-on. Mike Berry (27) and Paul Turner (41) hit useful contributions, with McAllister reaching a patiently constructed half century (62). John Foreman then smashed 35 from 20 balls as West amassed a competitive 260 in 50 overs. For us Chris Holt claimed 3 for 54 and Matt Holt took 2 for 54, but Weththasinghe was the pick of the bowlers conceding just 28 from his 10 overs.

Our reply got off to the worse possible start as Jordan Williams removed Taylor third ball. From that point things went from bad to worse as our innings stalled and failed to get going at all with Chris Holt the only top order batsmen to offer some resistance as he took on the role McAllister played in the West innings, but unfortunately without any support around him. Frustration got the better of Weththasinghe (8) and he resorted to dancing down the track and missing a Paul Turner lollypop, presenting Williams with an easy stumping. Wickets continued to tumble to Turner's 'flighted' deliveries and we soon found ourselves 54 for 6, with only Chris Holt (31) reaching double figures.

Skipper Penchion and Carl Sutcliffe took the score past 100 with a 48 run partnership in 20 minutes, with some hard hitting and excellent running between the wickets, which was exactly what was required with such a huge total to chase. Turner bore the brunt of the punishment as Sutcliffe (40) smashed a dent in his figures which read 5 for 15 upto that point, before being bowled by a ball that didn’t bounce as much as expected.

We lost our final 4 wickets for 7 runs to be bowled out for a dismal 109, with Turner finishing with figures of 6 for 42.
Next weekend the first team travel to Denton on Saturday with the third team in action at Dukinfield on Sunday.
