T20 Calamity at Cheetham Hill
Monday, 19 July 2010

Last Saturday on arrival at Cheetham Hill we were greeted by a green, uncovered strip with a sopping wet square and outfield which was unfit for play. However, the weather took a turn for the better and after a token effort to mop up from the players that arrived on time coupled with a couple of hours of sunshine, a twenty over a side match began at 4.30pm.

The home side won the toss, chose to bat first and went on the attack from the off in typical T20 style, although for a short time we managed to restrain the hosts who reached 66/1 from 10 overs. Opening pair of professional Butt and Zeshan Mirza smashed boundaries at will with the ball disappearing out of the ground on numerous occasions. Mirza was first to go for 43 after a mix up led to a run out (a knock which included 3 fours and 4 maximums from 27 balls). He was soon followed by Bajwa who went second ball for 6. Anwar and Butt continued to score heavily and the pair added 60 inside 7 overs before Butt (49) was caught on the boundary by Taylor with the score 132/3. The home side then put on 24 from the last 3 overs with big hitting from Anwar  who made an unbeaten 47 (which included 5 maximums). The Cheetham Hill innings finished on a formidable 156/4, with Stuart Catterall (1/47) our most economical bowler.

Requiring just under eight an over from the off, we struggled to adopt the big hitting approach demonstrated by our hosts and began to loss wickets trying to force the issue. We were soon in a state of disarray reaching 35/7 at halfway, with Saleem being the main strike bowler for Cheetham Hill. Only Paul Duerden put up any sort of resistance as he put bat to ball hitting 33 from 23 deliveries (which included 2 fours and 2 sixes) and in the process became our only batsmen to reach double figures. We were eventually bowled out for 70 with two balls remaining to cap off a bad day at the office. Saleem finished with 5/29 and Modi Ali picked up 3/39.

Our second team ran out comfortable winners over Cheetham Hill at the SCG. In a 37 over match we batted first and made 177/7, with Itchy Yahathugoda hitting 68, Jack Ritchie 42 and 38 from Alex Beirne. In reply the visitors only managed 93 as Noman Ahmed 4/43, Chris Marlor 2/26 and Tim Clements 4/23 did the damage with the ball.

Next weekend we will look to bounce back to winning ways as we entertain Dukinfield at the SCG on Saturday, followed by a trip to Thornham on Sunday.
